Helpful Hints for a Great RaceParking/Drop off: It will be dark early in the morning, so drive carefully and watch for bikes on the road!! Drop off will be at the bus stop at the entrance to the Reef Point parking lot. Do not leave your car or it will be towed. As a matter of safety, the Newport Beach Police Dept will be closing all crosswalks to all foot traffic during the race. Once the bike portion starts, no one will be allowed to cross PCH until the roads reopen, ~10am. DO NOT drop off or park at the Crystal Cove Shopping Center across the street. Please be courteous of the Shopping Center’s wishes to reserve their parking lot for their patrons.
Parking: Parking is limited so please try to carpool, if possible, late comers will have to park outside of the park. http://www.crystalcovestatepark.com/parkareas.htm Note: New Public parking at Campground Tunnel, next to swim start. Great for Spectators, and a way to get across PCH.
Parking cost: Los Trancos, Pelican Point, and El Moro Parking lots ($15), note: stop by the Beachcomber Restaurant after the race, buy a couple of beers, and get a free parking coupon; use a backpack and park at the homes of friends or family in CdM; FREE Parking with three or more carpool at Reef Point Lot, until full. Volunteers must have a carpool of three or more to park at the Reef Point lot. This lot usually fills by 5:30am, so get there early. Transition area closes at 6:30am, so don’t be late. Also, finishers will not be allowed to leave the transition with their bikes until after the last biker has left the transition area, and a special aisle will be set up adjacent to the bike exit. Please don't hop the fence. The Reef Pt parking lot will not be opened until the last bike has returned from the course. All crosswalks will be closed until the NBPD deems it safe to reopen them…so just mingle with your follow racers and enjoy the post party.
Rules 101: Here’s a simplified version of the rules of the road that will suffice for the first timers; it’s the competitive age-groupers responsibility to understand and follow the exact USAT regs:
You must have your approved helmet on and strapped before mounting your bike, “bar-ends” must be plugged on your handlebars. You must walk or run in the transition area - no riding ‘til the mount line .You must have your race number pinned on and visible and numbers on your bike on the left side of top tube, and on the front of your helmet. You will need to get body-marked Sunday morning. Enter T1 at the bike exit. Do not follow the biker in front of you closely. Be at least 3 bike lengths behind them. It’s dangerous and you cheat the wind and your opponents. This is a position violation, called drafting. Ride your bike as far to the right as possible. Pass only on the left and immediately move back to the right. Violation of this rule is blocking. Let the faster riders go through; they’re going for the gold (and crystal). Rack your bike properly and respect your follow competitor’s equipment. Please no spectators in the transition area (grounds for a big DQ). Follow the directions of the race officials, park officials and marshals without question. Any un-sportsmanship like behavior can result in DQ. No head phones-be alert and aware. Know the course. Be prepared for bad weather. You must wear your ankle transponder throughout the race and hand it to a race official after crossing the finish line to receive a time. There’s a fee if lost. HAVE FUN!!!

Surf Forecast: I spoke to the CCSP lifequards and it was stated to me that the surf will die off starting Sunday (9/3) diminishing thru the week, with the water warming up! The 5 day forcast is for surf to decrease to 2.5' max sets by Wednesday or smaller. And if those ripples should bother you, we have an official duathlon, and we will allow anyone to switch from the tri to the du if so desired. go to: http://magicseaweed.com/Morro-Beach-Surf-Report/288/ for your current surf forecasts.
Please get friend and family spectators across the highway in a timely manner. And once in the park, have them stay in the areas designated for spectators, off the race course, and please be quick to follow the directions of our officials; all for a SAFE and Fair race!! Parking for the expo on Saturday will be FREE! Remember to attend the course talks and ALUCANEAT Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast starting at the expo at 10am and Boy Scout Troop 90 BurgerLunch thereafter....registration packet pickup starts at 11am.
Expo Registration:Remember too, for those last minute folks, online registration closes midnight Wednesday. We will have 50 tri race entries at the expo, first come/ first served (11am), and plenty of Du, Aqua and Supersprints too. ONLY Aquathlon entries allowed race morning; bring ID and $10 cash for USAT oneday license. We will only have race packets Sunday morning for those who have prepaid for late packet pickup; 'tis very likely ya won't be racing.
Run Course Change/Aquathlon Map: Due to severe sand erosion, there is little left of the beach just south of the Cottages---its all rock. Therefore the alternative run course below is likely. Please note that it is run in a clockwise direction, with a turnaround at the first restroom after passing the cottages and straight back to the finish using the bike path. NOTE, we will not enter the HISTORIC DISTRIC.
