OC Duathlon Course Information

2K RUN – Age groupers will begin the 2K as a mass start heading south on the Aliso Creek Bike Trail. This is a quick out and back, and will be timed so that the start of the bike is coordinated with the lead rider from the triathlon.
40K BIKE -

ALWAYS REMEMBER, THE HIGHWAY IS OPEN TO LOCAL TRAFFIC. THERE ARE UNMARKED
INTERSECTIONS, ALTHOUGH THE MAIN ONES ARE MARKED. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, ALWAYS, TO AVOID COLLISIONS!! HEADS UP, IT’S A TOUGH COURSE.

This course is quite challenging and beautiful at the same time. There are a number of hills that will slow you down, but the down hills will be quite fast and require special alertness to be safe. It is an out & back course that will cover 22 miles of Santiago Canyon Road. The pavement is quite smooth and fast. It is very important that you stay in the Bike Lane at all times. There will be slowed auto traffic in the Canyon, monitored by CHP throughout, but always be thinking SAFETY.

After entering the transition area you will proceed to your bike, change shoes, put your helmet on, buckle the strap, and proceed to run or walk your bike through the transition area. Upon exiting the transition area, you will mount your bike in the designated area. You will then head north on the Aliso Creek Bike trail. Shortly the bike path will enter a NARROW TWO-WAY -- NO PASSING section under the bridge. When reaching the .4 mile NARROW TWO-WAY on the uphill side, you will be able to pass. So, slower riders PLEASE STAY TO THE RIGHT.
After reaching the top of the section, you will make a sharp Right Turn into a tunnel that will take you under Santiago Canyon Road and onto the right side of Santiago Canyon Road. (This tunnel and entry onto the road is just a few hundred yard south of Cook's Corner.) At this point you will be merging with the OCTri bike course and riders.

You will then proceed along Santiago Canyon Road (approximately 8 miles) passing under the Hicks Haul Road Bridge. Turning right on to the Blue Diamond Haul Road you have made it to the turn around.

Please Note: There will be no aid/water stations along Santiago Canyon Rd / El Toro Rd., so carry your own water/energy drink.

Continuing on the course you will cross the bridge over Santiago Canyon Road, proceed another 1/4 mile to a left turn which takes you to Santiago Canyon Road again going South.  Entering Santiago Canyon Road southbound you will follow Santiago Canyon Road until approximately .4 mile past the famous Cooks Corner Restaurant & Bar (corner of LIve Oak and Santiago Canyon) where you will leave the road and enter the dedicated Bike Path
to the side of the road.

CAUTION: shortly after entering the bike path, you will enter a .4 mile NARROW TWO-WAY section of the bike path. This section is a NO PASSING section on the downhill. The bike path then widens to a normal road width where you can pass at will. Shortly after this point you will be nearing the Transition. Please be alert and follow directions from volunteers.

Prepare to dismount your bike in the designated area, and proceed into the transition area to rack your bike and prepare for the final Run.

AGAIN…..ALWAYS REMEMBER, THE HIGHWAY IS OPEN TO LOCAL TRAFFIC. THERE ARE UNMARKED INTERSECTIONS, ALTHOUGH THE MAIN ONES ARE MARKED. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, ALWAYS, TO AVOID COLLISIONS!! HEADS UP, IT’S A TOUGH COURSE.

10K RUN –  The 10K run segment is the same course as the OC Triathlon and is mostly off road using predominately biking and hiking trails in the cities of Lake Forest and Mission Viejo. On race day the course will be well marked and have plenty of volunteers on hand to direct you. Be sure to attend the prerace tour of the run course on the two Sundays preceeding race weekend. From the Transition the run proceeds 2.5 miles, southerly, down the Aliso Creek Bike Trail. At this point the athletes will cross underneath El Toro Rd. continuing south on the Bike Trail. Near the Creekside and Sunlight Creek intersection the athletes will turn left crossing Sunlight Creek. This will lead them to Pebble Creek Park. Crossing the grass area the runners go through a gate opening onto a fire/hiking path in the hillside divide between Dineral and Via Noveno Roads in Mission Viejo.ŕ This path exits another gate at the intersection of Mojave and Noveno and the runners follow Noveno for 50 yards before making a left turn onto the Glen Park Wilderness Trail. Following the trail the athletes will be taken to the corner of Los Alisos Blvd and Vista del Lago. The athletes cross at this intersection and proceed up the sidewalk (north side) on Vista del Lago and enter onto a walking path heading north. This takes them back to near the Marguerite Pkwy / Olympiad intersection. At Marguerite, make a right, proceed down the hill to Vista del Lago, make a 180 U-turn and proceed in a northerly direction in the #2 northbound lane back to Olympiad. Turn right on Olympiad, pass  the historic 1984 Olympic bike race finish line, another right at the entrance to the lake, pass the swim/bike transition area, a sharp left on the promenade, and a sprint along the beach to the finish. Congratulations!! You have just finished what we believe will become a classic course for the Sport of Duathlon.  Enjoy the post race beach party; bring a cooler with your favorites
